Le Toit de la Grande Arche, often referred to simply as the Grande Arche, is a fine modern building in an interesting and newly redeveloped district of Paris. The building catches the light in intriguing ways and is a bold and vibrant contribution to Paris’s architecture, proving that this is a city not content to live off it’s former glories and wallow in the past, but one that will invest in new ideas.
The building is a strange, square arch which seems to defy gravity. The unusual exterior encompasses a large amount of internal space, which is dedicated to mixed business and leisure use. There is an amazing panorama from the rooftop here which stretches all the way to the Arc de Triomphe, of which Le Toit de la Grande Arche may be seen as some kind of futuristic echo.
There is always a huge variety of cultural exhibitions and events, which take place within the Arche. Also within the Arche is a fine restaurant, brasserie, and gift shop. This is actually a rather magnificent building in Europe’s largest business district.
It is powerful triumph of modernist architecture that is at once a futuristic echo of the Arc de Triomphe and a thriving business hub. Buildings cannot all be old and gothic, and modern ones should not strive to be. Le Toit de la Grande Arche is an impressive addition to the modern skyline and a treat to visit.
